The country is going to hell in a handbasket, but at least architects can make us laugh.
Evanston architects Stuart Cohen and Julie Hacker were among the architects asked by The Guardian on London to redesign the Oval Office for the presidency of Barack Obama. Here is their very witty response:
“In Obama’s Oval Office bookcases have been added to either side of the fireplace to communicate that this is a literate presidency. The fireplace is redesigned and the secret doors in the oval walls to either side of the fireplace are no longer secret. All the furniture, including the president’s desk is replaced by a large round table suggesting that the participants in meetings and discussions are equal. The new president will use this table as his desk. The floor globe of the world is a reminder that we are part of a larger whole. It can also be used as a learning aid for any elected official unsure of the difference between a continent and a country.”
