Heyward-Washington House is a historic house museum. The house gets its name because George Washington would often stay there during his visits to Charleston. It was built in 1772 by Thomas Heyward Jr. He studied law in England. Heyward was a signer of the United States Declaration of Independence. In 1775 he was the last delegate to sign the Declaration of Independence. Additionally, in 1778 he served as a judge in South Carolina. He retired in 1798.
